LAKESHORE SCHOOL

(Picture unavailable. Unless someone out there has one ???)

The Lakeshore School District was established in the early 1860s and a school house was built below what is now Circle Court, near what was known as the Pierce place. This was needed because of all of the children of the families working for the Spring Valley Water Company to cut logs that were used to build the dam on Cache Creek in Lower Lake. After the dam was destroyed by irate citizens of the county in 1868, the families moved away to find new work. There weren't enough children left, and the school closed.

Sam Morrison had built an early schoolhouse in the canyon back of what is now Circle Court, paying the teacher himself. (She received $12 a month plus room and board). He built a later school across from his home place, where the Lucerne Garage was later located. This school was used during periods when the Lake Shore School District lapsed due to not enough children.

Around 1880, the Lakeshore School District again took over. This time the school was located at Barltett Landing (see the Barlett Landing page). It was held in several different houses until it was located in the flat where the road to Bartlett Springs leaves the present Highway 20.

The school count dropped below the requirement again, about 1889. The private Morrison school was used again. More children came into the area and the Lakeshore school continued at Bartlett Landing until the late 1890s.

The school was then moved to a spot in the mouth of the canyon; held in the old Miners' Cabin. School lasted here for about ten years and finally closed. After the closure of this last school, the remaining children went to the Hammond School, which was closer to what is now Nice. On July 5, 1906 the Lakeshore School District lapsed and was added to the Upper Lake School District
